Community Service

At St. Luke's School, our service to school, neighborhood, and world is committed to direct participation and active involvement. Each class participates in one or more community service activities. A “service learning” approach is used whenever possible by linking community service to the classroom curriculum. The Outreach Committee of the Parents Association coordinates school-wide service activities and publicizes opportunities to serve others.  Students, faculty, and parents participate in numerous events, and our community supports an array of organizations.  Some past activities include:

  • Fund-raising and other support for charitable organizations such as UNICEF, City Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, and local social service agencies.
  • The annual Jog-a-thon: Students in Grades 2 – 8 raise funds for organizations selected by the students.
  • Collaborative projects with The Church of Saint of Luke Fields, including support for and service at the St. Clement's Food Pantry in mid-town Manhattan; support for a school serving children orphaned by AIDS in Ilenge, South Africa; and GO @ St. Luke's, a tutoring program held at St. Luke's on Saturdays during the school year to support underachieving public school students.
  • The Partners Program:  Students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 2 are partnered with children from an older grade and meet weekly for activities and projects.  In Grade 3, students become older partners to their younger schoolmates.
  • Grade 7 and Grade 8 Community Service: Students in Grades 7 and 8 select individual and group service projects to work on throughout the school year.  Past experiences have included partnerships with Peter’s Place, a homeless shelter for senior citizens; work at a New York food pantry; and participation in GMHC’s AIDS Walk NY.
  • Upper School Student Representatives:  Student Representatives discuss policies affecting St. Luke's, make improvement suggestions, share ideas for social opportunities, and provide leadership for the school, e.g. in service learning projects.
