our Upper school program

nurtures students' whole selves.

Students embrace their growth both as academic learners and, importantly, as engaged citizens. We present students with questions that push their thinking, and provide the support to help them find their own answers. Through this approach, we balance curiosity and challenge. Our Upper School prepares students for the rigors of high school, but also for a life embedded with a sense of values, purpose, and agency.

Academics that Balance Curiosity and Challenge

Our curriculum grounds classroom learning in the context of lived experience. In this way, students invest in their own education, because they understand that their voice matters. In our interdisciplinary program, students have the chance to see what it feels like to be a scientist, to be on stage, to be a historian, a painter, a teammate. With an emphasis on thoughtful, rigorous, and innovative education—our students learn how to think critically and creatively. From studying the components of DNA replication to breathing life into words on a page, a St. Luke’s education fosters well-rounded and engaged students who are unafraid to ask questions and seek out answers. As they mature, students have more opportunities to make choices and go deeper into the areas that capture their inspiration and imagination. Our Upper School students have the space to explore, experiment, and grow into true seekers of knowledge.

From the Classroom into the World

In the Upper School, our field trip program offers unique, distinct experiences that are intentionally designed to build on each other, forming a cohesive journey. Learning comes alive and becomes multidimensional through varied experiences and excursions that span disciplines.   Using New York City as a classroom, each grade goes on numerous day trips throughout the year. In addition to these day trips, each grade embarks on one larger-scale, age-appropriate excursion with an intentional learning objective.

Each experience, which includes thoughtful and intentional pre- and post-trip work, provides a framework for students to take significant steps in their own journey toward becoming civic-minded community members, passionate about making the world a better place.

An Advisory Program that Fosters Authentic Self Discovery

Our unique advisory program at St. Luke’s is a cornerstone of students' academic experience, providing a network of support while encouraging students’ independence. Advisors act as empathetic guides who allow students the freedom to navigate their own paths. In small, close-knit groups, students have a safe space to ask difficult questions, have fun, and truly be – and become – who they want to be. They examine their actions and the impact of those actions in the spirit of workshopping themselves. Through this program, students build confidence, connection, and community.

A Community of Changemakers

Leadership at St. Luke’s is intertwined with service, promoting a sense of justice and human connection. Through initiatives like student council, convocation, co-curricular service learning, and the culminating Grade 8 Capstone Projects, students gain the courage and skills to lead change. These experiences prepare them not only for their future educational endeavors but also to be responsible and engaged citizens in the broader world. Unique to the K-8 model, middle schoolers are given the opportunity to grow into role models within the community. Because they feel seen, valued, and heard, students learn to identify needs and take action. With the earnest belief in the possibility of a better world, St. Luke’s leaders are authentic changemakers who act from a foundation of optimism and hope.
