Join Us for the ABCs of DEI: A Primer for Parents
Rebecca Swanberg

The ABCs of DEI: A Primer for Parents — The tagline in St. Luke School’s mission statement—“Learning with joy. Leading with heart.”—applies to the adults as well as the children in our community. We aim to foster lifelong learning that sparks joy, courage, and curiosity in everyone in our “village in the West Village.” In pursuit of this mission, St. Luke’s School is pleased to offer to parents an introductory Zoom “course” on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the 2022 winter/spring trimesters.

Dr. Brad Braxton, our Chief DEI Officer, will facilitate these interactive sessions. Considering ongoing social justice protests, debates about the meaning of democracy in the United States, and misinformation about DEI in the media, these sessions will provide parents a safe and brave space to talk, listen to, and learn with others.

The course will consist of four hour-long Zoom sessions (7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) on the following days:

  • Thursday, February 24

  • Tuesday, March 8

  • Tuesday, April 5

  • Tuesday, April 26

As texts for the course, participants will read one brief newspaper article for each session. Each article will highlight a significant DEI issue shaping our world today and potentially shaping the many tomorrows in which our children will live. If you have questions, concerns, or want to learn more about social justice and how topics such as socio-economic status, gender, sexual identity, race/ethnicity influence various fields including education, business, politics, and the arts, this course is for you!

The course is free and will require registration. To facilitate transformative learning and deep sharing, attendance at all four sessions is strongly encouraged. Thus, we kindly ask participants to consider their ability to commit to all four sessions prior to registering. Details about registration will be forthcoming soon.
