Our music curriculum allows every student to uniquely connect to music.

At St. Luke’s, our music program hones and supports students’ musical abilities as they work towards fluency. Through joyful exploration, students gain concrete skills, grounded in both practice and study.

The program offers a broad range of musical experiences to all students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. A strong aural component is augmented by a wide range of developmentally-appropriate hands-on activities and kinesthetic experiences.

With the kinesthetic understanding of how the beat feels, students can learn what the symbols look like to represent the sound, beginning their journey towards musical fluency.

Students begin by learning the building blocks of do, re, and mi.  Gradually, they learn to sing, compose, and read simple melodies. Students then learn to accompany familiar songs with xylophones and unpitched percussion with musicality and timing.

As they grow older, recorders, ukuleles, and band instruments are added to the student experience. They develop vocal confidence and a love of singing over the years through the learning of songs from different genres. By the time they reach Grade 7 and 8, students focus on making music as an ensemble and learn related skills, including music theory, harmony, and rhythm.
