Chapel is a special time for our school community to gather.
In prayer, song, reflection, and celebration, chapel allows the St. Luke's School community to come together on a weekly basis. In the Episcopal Church, one of the promises made in the sacrament of Baptism is to respect the dignity of every human being. The Chapel gathering at St. Luke’s School embodies this promise, and is an opportunity for all members of the community, regardless of their beliefs and faith practices, to come together to learn, explore, and experience many faith traditions in ways that are developmentally appropriate. Students are encouraged to ask questions during chapel and frequently share their own experiences of faith and religion.
Students in Grades 3 - 8 attend a weekly Eucharist service on Thursday mornings. Students participate in the Episcopal liturgy by way of hymns and prayers. Holy Communion is offered to all. Those who chose to not receive Communion, may receive a blessing from the priest, light candles in memory or honor of a loved one, write a prayer request in a special book, or receive unconsecrated bread as a reminder that no one who is hungry should ever be turned away.
Opportunities for participation in the Chapel program are varied.
Students may sing with the St. Luke’s Choristers, serve as an acolyte, or volunteer to read at Eucharist.
Choristers
The St. Luke Choristers sing at the Thursday Eucharist. Students in Grades 4-8 who would like to sing audition with the Church Director of Music in the fall. Students in Grade 3 may audition in the winter, joining the Choristers in the Spring semester. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays after school and on Thursday mornings before Eucharist.
Choristers are encouraged, but not required, to sing at the 9:15 Mass on Sundays at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields.
Reading in eucharist
Each week, students volunteer to read during Eucharist. Students of all faiths are encouraged to participate.
Acolytes
Students in Grades 4-8 are welcome to serve as Acolytes at the Thursday Eucharist. Acolytes assist the clergy before, during, and after the service, filling various rolls as needed. Grade 3 students may join in the spring semester. Students of all faiths may participate with parental permission.
