Chapel
Chapel is a special time set aside for all members of the school community to gather in the church for prayer, song, reflection, and celebration. Chapel services at St. Luke's School follow the Episcopal liturgy, adapted to the changing needs and traditions of an interdenominational student body and faculty.
Students participate in a quiet and respectful way; some find it a time to renew or develop their own religious life while others use it as an opportunity for quiet contemplation. Chapel is led by one of the clergy, the Head of School, the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, or other members of the school community.
Each class in Grade 5 - 8 will have an opportunity to plan and lead a chapel; students in Grade 3 - 8 may choose to serve as acolytes, and all students have the opportunity to read their class petitions during Thursday Holy Eucharist. Festive Eucharist takes place approximately six times a year to celebrate various holy days. Parents and visitors are always welcome at Chapel.
The Chapel schedule is as follows*:
Monday | 8:30 a.m. | Grade 5 - 8 and faculty participate in a period of quiet meditation and reflection. |
Wednesday | 8:30 a.m. | Grade 5 - 8 enjoy a Chapel alternatively led by the Chaplain and Head of School. |
9:10 a.m. | JK - Grade 4 participate in a developmentally appropriate Chapel. | |
Thursday | 8:30 a.m. | Grade 3 - 8 celebrate a community Eucharist. |
*Note: There may be some changes to the 20-21 school year due to COVID-19.
Acolytes
Acolytes assist the clergy during Thursday Chapel. A school faculty member works with the clergy to train and supervise interested students in Grade 3 - 8. Students of all faiths may participate with parental permission.
Choristers
The St. Luke’s Choristers sing each Thursday at Chapel, each Sunday at the 9:15 a.m. service of the Church of St. Luke in the Fields, and at various school and church events throughout the year. Students in Grade 4 - 8 who wish to become members of the St. Luke’s Choristers audition with the Church Director of Music. The Choristers normally rehearse on Wednesdays after school and on Thursday mornings before Eucharist.
