St. Luke’s School endeavors to create a culture of inclusive belonging.
Supported by our mission and our identity as an independent school with an Episcopal tradition, DEIJB is a communal partnership towards establishing a just and inclusive community where we value the inherent dignity of every constituent, nurture a sense of belonging, and provide equitable access for what people need to grow and reach their personal definition of success. This includes providing opportunities for students to learn about, celebrate, and respect each other across differences, such as race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, value systems, family structure, learning and physical differences, language, and age. In addition, we teach our children at age appropriate levels to think about power and privilege and ways that they can become upstanders, change makers, and advocates. To establish this culture, we believe that the entire community must be committed to deepening our work towards diversity, equity, and social justice.
What does DEIJB mean?
DIVERSITY involves the various and valuable ways that individuals and groups differ from each other including, but not limited to, ability, age, economic status, ethnicity/race, gender identity, immigration status, linguistic traditions, nationality, political beliefs, religious spiritual and ethical traditions, and sexual identity.
EQUITY refers to intentional individual and institutional efforts to counteract the disproportionate privilege and power related to difference that is unfairly afforded to some people while denied to others.
INCLUSION refers to intentional individual and institutional efforts to create environments where people can express and learn from their differences in safe, creative, and courageous ways.
SOCIAL JUSTICE refers to the restoration of unjust relationships and the pursuit of reciprocal relationships that promote individual and communal well-being.
BELONGING involves intentional individual and institutional work to establish a community where people’s dignity is upheld, humanity is celebrated, and authenticity is valued.
The Dimensions of DEIJB
DEIJB work is multidimensional, encompassing students, staff, and family. By engaging with these subgroups of our community intentionally, we strive to cultivate an authentic, intersectional approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging.
